Holidays: Day 26: That nasty word

The hubster goes back to work today after a glorious three weeks off.  I don't think he's had such a big block of time off for about five years and we have revelled in having home. While we're so grateful he has a good steady job, we'll miss him.

Tomorrow brings a renewed attack on the D word.  You know the one, the one everyone groans at.  Discipline.

For the past four days I've been easing myself off an excess of yummy treats after feeling the Christmas podge with the free version of the Noom app.  PaisleyJade linked to it last week and I was intrigued.  I have to say, I don't do diets very well but I'm aware that I eat quite unhealthily, am addicted to sugary things and know I need to do more exercise.

This little app, however has been an answer to prayer (literally) and is busy giving me lots of challenges to think about.   It includes a food and exercise log as well as snippets to read every day about healthy eating and exercise.

Since using it, I've noticed that I'm more conscious of what exactly is on my plate, how unhealthy spreads, sauces, desserts, wine, an excess of meat or unnecessary snacks are, and of how much of my daily calorie budget has already been 'spent' at any given time of the day.

It's a bit like spending money.  You have x amount of calories that you need to aim for and where you spend them is up to you, but if you've only reached lunchtime and you've already eaten 1000 out of your 1200 budget for the day, you know that making a tray of mouthwatering cinnamon scrolls might not be your best afternoon activity.

Other areas of discipline I'm working on are

  • getting back to my early morning walks again after the Christmas break (oh how that extra sleep has made me feel much more rested!
  • thinking up ways of cutting down our electricity bill (like putting the dryer on after 10pm and not during the day)
  • seeing if I can start doing some extra exercisey things like sit ups, squats and (gah!) push ups?
  • saving from my weekly budget for the upcoming financial bottleneck that is the start of school (music fees, scout fees, school 'voluntary' contributions, textbook costs).
  • not overspending on food when I have things in the cupboard I could use.
  • keeping on blogging daily if I can.  I want to do this but sometime real life takes over and well, priorities are priorities my friend!
  • sewing and getting the Etsy shop revamped and up and running again and probably doing some markets too.
Why is sewing and the Etsy shop under the Discipline umbrella? Well, I tend to get discouraged and give up when things start to look too hard to do and I know I'm hitting that point.  Sales online haven't been thrilling before Christmas, although two wonderful wonderful friends did put in sizeable Christmas orders which was a big blessing.  The last market I did was HARD work.  A party the night before meant I felt exhausted and then to cap it all we battled incredibly strong winds and I forgot lots of essentials - like the legs to a table and a screwdriver to put a clothing rack up.  It wasn't a very jolly experience.  Hence, a long hard think and ... lots of discipline.

Little Bun starts two days a week of pre-school at the end of January so I've been praying about a (big for me) decision.  Do I hunt for a part-time job outside the home?  Or do I throw everything I can into the sewing/baking thing and see where that leads me.  At the moment my gut is veering towards the sewing/baking/business from home but I'm sure there'll be lots more praying and flying by the seat of my pants.

Nobody likes discipline but when I look back to how much things like taking the time to have a quiet time every morning has blessed me, I wouldn't have it any other way.  What areas are  you having to be disciplined in as you start back in 2013?

  1. Discipline is not fun at all, but entirely necessary. I too get discouraged easily when the waters look a little murky, and am almost constantly in need of a kick in the pants to get going again. But, hard work pays off for those who put it in - if I were you I'd put a ton of hours into your craft. Batten down the fort, and sell your wares. Much more satisfaction than a regular job. :) xoxo, Jess
